The Time Management Method Elon Musk Uses

Discover timeboxing, the time management secret of Elon Musk who runs Tesla, SpaceX, and X (Twitter) simultaneously.

Tesla, SpaceX, X (formerly Twitter), Neuralink, The Boring Company…

How does Elon Musk manage to run more than 5 companies at the same time?

One of his secrets is Timeboxing.

What Is Timeboxing?

Timeboxing is a time management technique where you assign specific time blocks to tasks.

Instead of just “Write report,” it’s “Write report from 9 AM to 11 AM.”

The Difference from a Regular To-Do List

To-Do ListTimeboxing
Write report09:00-11:00 Write report
Check emails11:00-11:30 Check emails
Prepare for meeting14:00-15:00 Prepare for meeting

A to-do list tells you what to do, but timeboxing tells you when to do it.

Why Is Timeboxing So Effective?

1. Leveraging Parkinson’s Law

“Work expands to fill the time available for its completion” - Parkinson’s Law

Without a deadline, a task that could take an hour drags on all day. Timeboxing creates artificial deadlines that boost focus.

2. Reducing Decision Fatigue

When “What should I do now?” repeats dozens of times a day, it drains your energy. Timeboxing reduces decision fatigue because decisions are made in advance.

3. Guaranteeing Deep Work

When you allocate a 2-hour block for important work, you can achieve deep focus without interruption during that time.

4. Developing Realistic Time Awareness

When you actually do tasks, you experience “That took longer than expected” or “That was surprisingly quick.” This feedback accumulates into increasingly accurate time estimates.

Elon Musk’s 5-Minute Schedule

Musk reportedly manages his day in 5-minute blocks.

Of course, not everyone needs to live in 5-minute increments. But the core principle is the same:

When you intentionally allocate time, you can accomplish more.

Getting Started with Timebox Planner

Step 1: List Today’s Tasks

First, write down everything you need to do today. Don’t worry about timing yet.

Step 2: Set Priorities

From your list, select the 3 most important things.

  • What absolutely must be done today?
  • What can only I do?
  • What will cause problems if postponed?

Step 3: Arrange Time Blocks

Now assign times to each task.

Tips:

  • Schedule important tasks in the morning (when focus is highest)
  • Keep each block to 90 minutes or less (focus limit)
  • Add 15-minute buffers between blocks (for unexpected things)

Example:

09:00-10:30 Write proposal (core work)
10:30-10:45 Break
10:45-11:30 Check emails and messages
11:30-12:00 Prepare for tomorrow's meeting

Step 4: Execute and Record

As you follow your plan, record actual time spent.

“I estimated 2 hours for the proposal, but it took 1 hour 30 minutes.”

This data accumulates to help you plan more accurately next time.

Step 5: Evening Review

Invest just 5 minutes at the end of the day to reflect.

  • What went according to plan?
  • What was different from expected?
  • What can I improve tomorrow?

It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect from the Start

When you first start timeboxing, things often don’t go as planned. That’s normal.

What matters is consistently trying and adjusting.

Try it for just one week. You’ll definitely notice a difference in yourself.

Timebox Planner Tips

  1. Drag and Drop: Drag tasks to your desired time slots
  2. Recurring Events: Set up repeating schedules for daily routines
  3. Notifications: Get alerts before important blocks start
  4. Statistics: See where your time is really going

Cheering you on today.

It’s okay if you’re not running 5 companies like Elon Musk. Each of our days is precious.

Be intentional with your day using Timebox Planner. Small time blocks add up to meaningful days, and meaningful days add up to the life you want.

Your time is valuable. Use it wisely.
